One of several gigs that Barry did in New Zealand, this and a local house concert were the standouts!
Great music in the early evening in stunning surroundings with great food, atmosphere and staff – what more can we (or the musician) ask for. Magic interaction and connection with audience and artist. Plus a didgeridoo and bongo jam with Rob Reilly, well known local musician.
Barry’s extreme vocal interpretations of loads of his originals and covers from Curtis Mayfield, The Stones, Keb Mo, Tom Waits and many more kept the large audience spell bound, enthralled and of course wanting more.
Thanks for a great evening Luke and staff, and Barry. Excellent venue, music and pizzas!!!
A great night with the Nukes although sadly only one set as preceded by Bosco and Honey.
We hadn’t heard The Nukes for a while but were pleasantly surprised that almost all their music was new to us, proving what hard working and talented musicians these guys are! They are also unique in that they only ever play originals.
Innovative, original, exiting, and humorous. Dave, Continue reading
What better way than to spend a weekend indulging ones’ passion – that’s what around 45 enthusiastic music lovers recently did at Max Maxwell’s Sing for Joy 2013 Summersing at Sharda Retreat in Tuakau.
Max put huge effort in to organising and making this a great event, assisted by guest tutor/facilitators. Brendan Taafe (USA) and Jimmy Dale (NZ). Continue reading
I wasn’t there, but those who were said it was a great fun day with excellent organisation, workshops and concert by The Spice Boys. Around 150 people attended from near and far! Well done to Ukumania for organising this.
Good solid “Paul Ubana” performances through the weekend. While I appreciate his great guitar skills, personally I am not a huge fan of his. With such big hands it is amazing that he can do what he does with a guitar!
In the old Church at the Jazz Village, a perfect venue for an intimate soulful performance from Joy and David MacRae (piano). Wonderful vocals of old standards with nice bluesy soulful accents and great piano. Could have listened for hours. Sadly I was disappointed with the CD I bought but only because it didn’t reflect the style of the performance I had just seen. Still a good well produced CD though from a very talented performer. Great Joy – come back soon and give us more!
Good set including lots of covers from the likes of Canned Heat. Good listening
I didn’t make it but Craig from the Flaming Mudcats did.
He told me it was great and I should have been there. Craig knows his music and especially his blues, so it must have been good!
Another one we shouldn’t have missed!
Jan Preston Trio including Jan, her husband on percussion, and Nigel Master of Kokomo on Bass.
If you like Boogie Woogie piano you love Jan. If you don’t, you still have to love her boundless enthusiasm, great Boogie Woogie skills and “showpersonship”. Pleased a large crowd at Red Square for several hours.
While funk is not really my thing, it was obvious that this band has talent in abundance, can set up good grooves and deliver a solid performance around them. I love bands with ättitude”and they have that for sure!
